This is going to be one of those articles that only appeals to grocery store nerds.  Everything  you ever wanted to know about our shopping carts.

Those of you who regularly come to the store know that we usually have a rag-tag assortment of shopping carts. It’s not by design, of course, but it seems to be a constant challenge to keep our supply of carts intact and looking their best. This blog post comes at a time when our supply is looking so rough that we’re shopping for some new (or used) shopping carts.

You may not know this but an average shopping cart costs in the neighbourhood of $150 each. The price adds up … and the carts tend to wander away 🙁 so we’re always trying to come up with a great way to make this cost effective for us.

This picture illustrates a cart that we love; the Loop 100L Express Cart! It’s one we saw in a grocery store that we visited while we were on vacation (yes, that’s what we do on vacation).  The beauty of this little gem is that it has a handle on each side so you can grab it anywhere and it rolls in every direction. This little beauty costs $170 each (yikes!); so sadly, you won’t be seeing it here at the Bownesian until the price comes down.

This time we’re checking out alibaba … to see if it’s more cost effective to have carts brought over from China.  It’s not something we’ve tried before and it remains to be seen if it will be a practical alternative. We’ll see how that goes. It seems as thought the shipping costs might be prohibitive; and it would take awhile to get them.

Depending upon how our search goes, we hope to have something new for you in the not too distant future. In the meantime, if you happen to see any of our carts around the neighbourhood, please give us a call and we’ll be happy to come and pick them up. Our phone number is 403-288-2988.
